SAN DIEGO — Four astronauts returning from humanity’s first crewed lunar flyby in 53 years will splash down in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of San Diego on April 10 — and the City of San Diego wants to make sure they pay their fair share.

In a memo quietly posted to the city’s website late Friday, the San Diego Parking Authority announced that the Orion spacecraft’s planned splashdown site falls within a newly designated “Coastal Aquatic Parking Zone,” and that NASA will be assessed a $75 landing fee, with an additional $12 per hour if recovery crews take longer than expected.

“We understand this is the first crewed mission beyond low Earth orbit since 1972,” said city spokesperson Dana Whitmore. “We also understand that the Pacific Ocean off our coastline is a premium location, and premium locations come with premium rates.”

NASA mission commander Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen — who have spent nearly 10 days traveling 695,000 miles around the Moon — were reportedly told of the fee via a laminated notice attached to their recovery vessel.

“They went around the Moon,” said a Navy recovery diver, who asked not to be named. “They came back. And the first thing we had to tell them was, ‘Hey, so San Diego charges for this now.'”

The decision has drawn comparisons to the city’s controversial paid parking rollout at Balboa Park, its $10 beach parking fees, and the proposed empty homes tax — leading many locals to suggest San Diego has simply given up pretending it won’t charge for anything.

City Councilmember Sean Elo-Rivera defended the policy. “Look, if you’re going to park a 20,000-pound spacecraft in our ocean, you need to pay like everyone else,” he said. “We also need the revenue. Have you seen our sidewalks?”

NASA has reportedly counter-offered with a bobblehead of the crew and two good seats behind the Padres’ dugout.

At press time, the city was exploring whether the Moon itself could be assessed a view tax.

If your ideal San Diego weekend involves choosing between Cypress Hill at Petco Park, a Broadway tearjerker, stand-up at the Balboa, lacrosse, hockey, or a full R&B singalong, congratulations, this is your week. The Padres are out of the way, which means Petco is hosting a full-on hip hop event instead. Honestly, not a bad trade. Here’s what looks worth leaving the house for from Friday, April 17 through Sunday, April 19.

Concerts

Cypress Hill: High & Outside – Above the Zone

Saturday, April 18 at 6pm, Petco Park

Cypress Hill at Petco Park is already enough to headline the weekend, then they went and added Tech N9ne and Bone Thugs-N-Harmony. That’s basically a festival lineup disguised as one concert. Outdoor hip hop at Petco should be a pretty great use of the stadium, especially with the skyline doing free production design in the background.

R&B ONLY LIVE

Saturday, April 18 at 8pm, House of Blues San Diego

This is for the people who want a full night of songs everyone knows without the DJ suddenly deciding it’s time for house remixes nobody asked for. R&B ONLY LIVE is built for singing along badly with confidence, which is honestly the correct way to do it.

Comedy

Mae Martin: The Possum

Friday, April 17 at 7:30pm, Balboa Theatre

Mae Martin is one of those comics who can be thoughtful and weird without losing the room. If you liked Feel Good, you already know the vibe. Friday night at the Balboa is a very solid start to the weekend.

Chris D’Elia: Go For It!

Saturday, April 18 at 7pm, Balboa Theatre

Chris D’Elia is at the Balboa on Saturday, which means you have a direct scheduling conflict with Cypress Hill if you’re especially ambitious. Different energies, same night. If stand-up is more your speed, this is a big-room comedy pick with an audience that will absolutely show up ready.

Arts and culture

The Notebook (Broadway Tour)

Friday to Sunday, April 17 to 19, San Diego Civic Theatre

Yes, The Notebook is a Broadway musical now, and yes, people who have seen it keep saying it actually lands. If you’re in the mood for something more dramatic than a concert or game, this is the polished downtown theater option for the weekend.

Sports

San Diego Seals vs. Las Vegas Desert Dogs

Friday, April 17 at 7:30pm, Pechanga Arena San Diego

Seals games are still one of the more underrated live sports nights in town. Box lacrosse moves fast, the crowd gets loud, and Pechanga is a good venue when the building actually has juice. Friday against Vegas should be fun.

San Diego Gulls vs. Coachella Valley Firebirds

Saturday, April 18 at 6pm, Pechanga Arena San Diego

The Gulls and Firebirds is a nice little Southern California hockey setup, and Saturday at 6 is a convenient slot if you want sports without giving up your entire night. Also, hockey is still the best option when you want to feel cold and yell productively.

SD Fight Night

Saturday, April 18 at 5pm, Frontwave Arena in Oceanside

If you don’t mind heading north, Frontwave Arena has SD Fight Night on Saturday. Combat sports crowds tend to bring their own atmosphere, and Oceanside keeps finding ways to become more of an event stop than people expect.

The Padres are back home against Colorado this weekend, which is always a good time at Petco Park (the Rockies tend to bring out the offense). But the real story might be Friday night when Black Coffee plays the Rady Shell and Ralph Barbosa fills the Civic Theatre on the same evening. Saturday has Colin Hay and KT Tunstall at the Balboa, and Disney On Ice runs all weekend at Pechanga. Saturday is stacked: San Diego FC hosts Minnesota United at Snapdragon, Akaash Singh does comedy at The Magnolia, Reik brings their Latin pop tour, and the Mojo play volleyball at Viejas. There’s something for everyone this time around.

Sports

San Diego Padres vs. Colorado Rockies

Friday-Sunday, April 10-12 – Petco Park

Three-game home series against Colorado. Friday is Party in the Park with a 6:40pm first pitch, Saturday is at 5:40pm. The Rockies are one of those opponents where the games tend to be high-scoring and entertaining, which makes for good ballpark nights. The early season energy at Petco is still there — the park hasn’t hit that mid-summer lull yet.

San Diego FC vs. Minnesota United FC

Saturday, April 11 at 7:30pm – Snapdragon Stadium

San Diego FC hosts Minnesota United at Snapdragon. Saturday night MLS at Snapdragon has become one of the better game-day experiences in San Diego — the supporter section is loud, the stadium is purpose-built for soccer, and the atmosphere keeps getting better.

San Diego Mojo vs. Orlando Valkyries

Saturday, April 11 at 6pm – Viejas Arena

Pro volleyball at Viejas Arena. The Mojo play in the PVF and the games are fast, loud, and surprisingly fun live even if volleyball isn’t usually your thing.

Concerts

Boots in the Park – San Diego

Saturday, April 11 at 1pm – Waterfront Park, downtown

Country music festival right on the waterfront downtown. Boots in the Park has been doing these across the Southwest and the San Diego edition at Waterfront Park is a good time — outdoor stage, boots and hats everywhere, and a solid lineup. Resale tickets starting around $159.

Black Coffee at The Rady Shell

Friday, April 10 at 3pm – The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park

Black Coffee is one of the biggest DJs in the world — a Grammy-winning South African house producer who’s headlined festivals everywhere from Ibiza to Coachella. Getting him at the Rady Shell on a Friday afternoon is a pretty rare opportunity. Afternoon outdoor electronic music on the waterfront with that view? That’s a hard combination to beat.

Colin Hay with KT Tunstall

Saturday, April 11 at 7pm – Balboa Theatre

Colin Hay is the voice behind “Who Can It Be Now?” and “Down Under” from Men at Work, and his solo acoustic stuff is genuinely great. KT Tunstall (“Suddenly I See,” “Black Horse and the Cherry Tree”) co-headlines. Two singer-songwriters with recognizable catalogs sharing a stage at the Balboa is a quality Saturday night out.

Lacuna Coil: Sleepless Empire Tour

Saturday, April 11 at 6:30pm – House of Blues

Italian gothic metal veterans Lacuna Coil bring the Sleepless Empire Tour to House of Blues with Escape the Fate and VOWWS supporting. Cristina Scabbia’s vocals are even better live than on record. If you’re into the heavier side of things, this is your Saturday pick.

Reik Tour 2026

Saturday, April 11 at 7:30pm – Downtown San Diego

Reik is one of the biggest Latin pop acts in the world — they’ve been filling arenas across Latin America for years and their catalog of romantic pop hits runs deep. If you’re into Latin music, this is a major get for San Diego.

Comedy

Ralph Barbosa: The Red 40 Tour

Friday, April 10 at 7:30pm – San Diego Civic Theatre

Ralph Barbosa blew up on TikTok and YouTube and has turned that into selling out theaters across the country. The Civic Theatre is a big room for a comedian, and the fact that he’s filling it says something about where his career is right now. If you’ve seen his clips online, the live show hits different. The Red 40 Tour name is peak Gen Z energy.

Akaash Singh: Generational Triumph Tour

Saturday, April 11 at 7pm (doors 6pm) – The Magnolia, El Cajon

If you know the Flagrant podcast with Andrew Schulz, you know Akaash Singh. He’s been building a solo comedy career that’s gotten huge in its own right, and the Generational Triumph Tour is selling out rooms everywhere. The Magnolia is a good venue for comedy — intimate enough to feel connected but big enough to have real energy.

Disney On Ice: Road Trip Adventures

Friday-Sunday, April 10-12 – Pechanga Arena (multiple showtimes)

Disney On Ice is at Pechanga all weekend with multiple shows each day. Friday at 7pm, Saturday at 3pm, Sunday at 11am and 3pm. If you have kids between 3 and 10, this is pretty much a guaranteed win. The costumes and skating are legitimately impressive even if you’re the parent who’s just there because you had to be.

The acai bowl situation in San Diego has a problem. Most places use sorbet as the base now. It’s cheaper, it’s easier to store, and it lets shops crank out bowls faster. The downside is it tastes like frozen sugar instead of acai. This frustrates people, and it comes up constantly in local food conversations. We went through every recommendation San Diegans consistently bring up and found the spots that still do it right.

Acai Carioca

Brazilian-owned, and you can tell. The acai base here is the real deal, not sorbet, not a pre-made mix from a bag. They blend it fresh with actual acai and the texture is thick, creamy, and slightly tart in a way that sorbet bowls never are. The peanut butter bowl is the most popular order. Located inside Baked Thicc on Voltaire Street in Point Loma. It’s a small setup, easy to walk past, and that’s part of the charm. People who have tried the acai bowls at every shop in San Diego consistently rank this one at or near the top.

3772 Voltaire St, Point Loma

Senor Mango’s

On North Park Way near 30th and Adams. Senor Mango’s has been getting mentioned in acai bowl conversations for years, and the recommendation always comes with the same advice: get the extra granola and add mango. The base is fruity and less syrupy than the sorbet shops. Portions are solid. Prices are reasonable by San Diego standards. Open early (6:30 AM), which makes it a pre-work option if you’re in the neighborhood.

3042 North Park Way, North Park

Sambazon

The Encinitas location of the brand that basically brought acai to America. Sambazon has been growing and distributing acai since 2000, and their cafe is where they show off. The bowls are thick and well-made. There’s a caveat: some people point out the sugar content is high (52 grams in the standard bowl). It’s not the most “pure” option on this list, but the flavor is hard to argue with, and the Encinitas shop on San Elijo Ave has a North County beach town vibe that fits the experience.

2031 San Elijo Ave, Encinitas

The American Acai Cafe

Brazilian-owned despite the name. On Garnet Ave in Pacific Beach. They use real acai in the base, not the sorbet shortcut. The bowls are well-portioned and the toppings are fresh. Locals who are particular about the sorbet issue consistently recommend this place alongside Acai Carioca as the two most authentic options in the city. Open 7:30 AM to 6 PM daily.

1001 Garnet Ave Suite 105, Pacific Beach

Surf Bowl Co.

Brand new. Opened February 2026 in the former Northside Shack space on Rosecrans in Point Loma. Run by the founder’s son, carrying the same approach to fresh acai bowls that made Northside Shack a local favorite before it closed. Still establishing itself, but early reports are positive and the lineage is strong. Worth checking out while it’s fresh and hungry.

1255 Rosecrans St, Point Loma

Juice Kaboose

Two locations: the original in La Jolla (Fay Ave, open since 1996) and the Pacific Beach spot on Garnet Ave. They buy produce daily and use zero added sugar in their bowls. The acai base seems to be legit blended fruit rather than a pre-made mix. Locals recommend eating it while staring at the ocean, and honestly that is solid advice for anything in La Jolla. Open 7:30 AM to 7 PM most days.

1826 Garnet Ave, Pacific Beach / 7556 Fay Ave, La Jolla

OB Smoothie Bar

Small shop on Newport Ave in Ocean Beach. Acai bowls, smoothies, wraps, subs. The acai is blended (not scooped from a sorbet tub) and the toppings are fresh. OB Smoothie has been quietly doing its thing for years while flashier shops open and close around it. Nothing fancy. Consistently decent. Open 9 AM to 5 PM, which is early-close but that’s OB for you.

5001 Newport Ave, Ocean Beach

Roots Bowls

The Hillcrest location gets the most mentions. Roots does acai bowls, pitaya bowls, and smoothie bowls. The portions are good and the base is consistently smooth. Not the most “authentic Brazilian” experience on this list, but it’s reliable, the staff is fast, and the Hillcrest shop has a clean, bright setup that feels like what a San Diego acai shop should look like.

Everbowl

Putting this here because Everbowl has a dozen locations across San Diego County and a lot of people go there. It used to be better. The original product was a freshly blended base with generous toppings. They’ve since switched to a scooped, hard-frozen base and raised prices while reducing portions. Locals noticed, and they’re vocal about it. Everbowl is still fine as a quick, accessible option, especially at locations near beaches and campuses. Just know that the people who were there before the change are still a little upset about it.

The Sorbet Problem, Explained

Real acai bowls use frozen acai pulp (or acai packets/cubes) blended with a little liquid into a thick, smooth base. It should taste slightly tart, earthy, and berry-like. Sorbet-based bowls use a pre-made frozen product that’s heavy on sugar and light on actual acai. The texture is icier, the flavor is sweeter, and it melts into a purple puddle faster.

Most locals who care about the distinction recommend Acai Carioca, American Acai Cafe, and Senor Mango’s as the best non-sorbet options. Sambazon is authentic but sweetened. The rest of the list falls somewhere in between. Every shop on this list is at least worth trying.

San Diego and tacos go together like sunsets and the Pacific — it’s not just a food here, it’s a way of life. With roughly 1,700 taco shops scattered across the county (yes, someone actually counted), this city takes its tacos more seriously than just about anywhere north of the border. And honestly? It should. When you’re 20 minutes from Tijuana and surrounded by generations of families who brought their recipes straight from Mexico, the bar is just naturally higher.

Whether you’re chasing the perfect al pastor off a trompo, craving crispy Baja-style fish tacos, or hunting for something wildly creative on a blue corn tortilla, San Diego delivers. These are the taco spots that locals actually line up for — not the places tourists stumble into because they’re near the hotel. If you love California burritos, you already know San Diego’s Mexican food scene is elite. But the taco game? It’s on another level entirely.

Harry’s Taco Club / Mike’s Taco Club: The Local Taco Empire

If you know Harry’s Coffee Shop — the beloved La Jolla breakfast institution — then you already know the family behind Harry’s Taco Club and Mike’s Taco Club. Same owner, same commitment to quality, different vibe entirely. Harry’s Taco Club has locations in Del Mar and Pacific Beach, while Mike’s Taco Club holds it down in Ocean Beach, and both are doing some of the most fun, flavorful tacos in the beach communities right now.

The menus lean into creative California-Baja mashups with quality ingredients — think slow-braised meats, fresh salsas, and handmade tortillas alongside killer margaritas. Mike’s Taco Club in OB especially has that perfect beachy dive energy where you can post up on the patio with a beer and a plate of tacos and watch the sunset. If you’re a fan of their breakfast and brunch game, the taco clubs are the natural next move for lunch and dinner.

Harry’s: Del Mar & Pacific Beach / Mike’s: 5060 Newport Ave, Ocean Beach

Puesto: Where Tacos Meet Fine Dining

Puesto took the humble taco and gave it a glow-up — and somehow it works beautifully. Their signature blue corn tortillas are handmade in-house and filled with creative combinations that change seasonally: filet mignon with lobster, zucchini blossom with truffle, chicken al pastor with grilled pineapple. It sounds like it could be gimmicky, but the execution is consistently excellent.

The original La Jolla location is tucked into the heart of La Jolla Village on Wall Street, and the Headquarters at Seaport spot downtown has a massive patio. Their margaritas are strong, the guacamole is made tableside, and the whole vibe is perfect for a date night or impressing out-of-town visitors. It’s pricier than your average taco shop — think $7-9 per taco — but the quality justifies it.

Lola 55: The Michelin-Recognized Taco Bar

Lola 55 earned a Michelin Bib Gourmand — which is basically Michelin’s way of saying “this place is incredible and you won’t go broke eating here.” Located in the East Village, this cocktail-forward taco bar brings serious culinary chops to every tortilla. Their beer-battered Baja fish taco is one of the best in the city, and the duck confit taco with mole negro is the kind of thing you’ll dream about for days.

The cocktail program is equally impressive — they’re not messing around with the mezcal drinks and house margaritas. The space itself is stylish without being pretentious, and the staff clearly loves what they do. If you want tacos that feel like an event without the stuffiness of fine dining, Lola 55 is your spot. Great for date night in San Diego too.

Mike’s Red Tacos: Birria Done Right

When the birria craze swept across social media, San Diego was already years ahead — and Mike’s Red Tacos was leading the charge. Their birria tacos are the real deal: slow-braised beef in a rich, deeply spiced red chile broth, stuffed into a corn tortilla that gets dipped and crisped on the griddle until it’s stained that beautiful crimson color. The consomé on the side for dipping is basically liquid gold.

Mike’s started as a food stand and blew up thanks to word of mouth (and Instagram, let’s be honest). They now have brick-and-mortar locations in Clairemont Mesa and Point Loma that are just as good. The quesabirria — a birria quesadilla hybrid — is an absolute must-order. Come hungry because portions are generous and you will not be able to stop at one.

Multiple locations — check Instagram for current spots

Lucha Libre Taco Shop: The Most Fun You’ll Have Eating Tacos

With its hot pink walls, luchador masks on every surface, and a vibe that’s basically a party that happens to serve tacos, Lucha Libre is an experience as much as a meal. The flagship Mission Hills location has been a San Diego institution for years, and they’ve expanded to multiple spots around the city. The Surfin’ California — carne asada, fries, guacamole, and sour cream stuffed into a tortilla — is basically a California burrito in taco form and it’s absurdly good.

Their secret menu is legendary among locals (ask about it). The regular menu has plenty of creative options too — the Triple Threat taco with three meats and three salsas is worth every calorie. It’s loud, it’s colorful, it’s chaotic in the best way. Not the place for a quiet dinner, but absolutely the place when you want killer tacos and good energy.

1810 W Washington St, Mission Hills

City Tacos: Creative Combos in North Park

City Tacos has quietly built one of the most loyal followings in North Park, and it’s easy to see why once you try their stuff. This is where traditional Mexican flavors meet unexpected creativity — think mahi-mahi with strawberry salsa, or the Mexicali taco with skirt steak topped with mashed potato and poblano peppers. It sounds wild on paper but every combination just works.

The portions are generous for the price, the tortillas are handmade, and the salsa bar is stocked with options ranging from mild to “why did I do that to myself.” The North Park location on University Ave is the original, but they’ve expanded to a few spots. Small, casual, no pretense — just really thoughtful tacos from people who clearly love what they do.

Taqueria Revolucion: Mesquite-Grilled Perfection

Taqueria Revolucion earns its loyal following the old-fashioned way — by cooking with mesquite wood imported from Mexico to get that smoky, charred flavor that you simply cannot replicate with a gas grill. The adobada is the headliner here: rotisserie-grilled on a trompo until it’s caramelized and crispy on the edges, tender in the middle, and absolutely dripping with flavor.

This is no-frills, TJ-style street food at its absolute best. The vampiro (a crispy tortilla with melted cheese, meat, and salsa) is another sleeper hit that regulars swear by. If you’re the kind of person who judges a taco shop by its salsa game, you’ll be impressed — their salsas are made fresh daily and the smoky chipotle one is addictive. Multiple locations around San Diego, all consistently great.

Multiple locations across San Diego

Roberto’s Taco Shop: The OG That Started It All

You can’t talk about San Diego tacos without talking about Roberto’s — the godfather of the San Diego taco shop. Roberto Robledo opened his first walk-up stand in 1964, and the legend goes that every taco shop in San Diego with “‘berto’s” in the name (Rigoberto’s, Alberto’s, Filiberto’s — there are hundreds) traces back to his family in some way. Whether or not that’s entirely true, Roberto’s is the real deal and the original.

The rolled tacos with guacamole are the signature move — crispy, tightly rolled beef taquitos smothered in guac and cheese. Their carne asada fries are also legendary late-night fuel after hitting the breweries in San Diego. It’s fast, it’s cheap, it’s open late, and it tastes exactly like San Diego is supposed to taste at 1am. Multiple locations, varying quality — the originals are still the best.

Multiple locations across San Diego County

Crack Taco Shop: Cardiff Crack in a Tortilla

The name alone gets people’s attention, but Crack Taco Shop earns its reputation with one secret weapon: Cardiff Crack. If you’re not familiar, that’s the nickname for Seaside Market’s famous burgundy pepper tri-tip — arguably the best marinated steak in San Diego County. Crack Taco Shop takes that legendary tri-tip and puts it in a taco, and it’s exactly as good as it sounds.

Beyond the namesake taco, the rest of the menu is solid — good burritos, quesadillas, and California burritos that compete with anyone. But let’s be real: you’re going for the Cardiff Crack taco. The meat is tender, smoky, slightly sweet from the marinade, and packed with enough flavor that you don’t even need salsa (but you should add it anyway). They’ve got locations in Mission Valley, Seaport Village, Encinitas, and Coronado.

4242 Camino Del Rio N, Mission Valley / 817 W Harbor Dr, Seaport Village / 106 Leucadia Blvd, Encinitas

Lolita’s Mexican Food: The California Burrito Kings Who Also Crush Tacos

Lolita’s is famous across San Diego for their California burritos, but sleeping on their tacos would be a serious mistake. The carne asada taco here is a masterclass in simplicity — perfectly seasoned, chargrilled steak on a double corn tortilla with onion, cilantro, and a squeeze of lime. No filler, no gimmicks, just excellent meat and excellent technique.

They’ve been consistently voted one of the best Mexican food spots in San Diego for years, and the line at the Barrio Logan location during lunch tells you everything you need to know. The fish tacos are also legit — beer-battered and crispy with a tangy white sauce. If you’re in Chula Vista or heading south, their multiple locations make it easy to get your fix.

Multiple locations including Barrio Logan, Chula Vista, and Kearny Mesa

Salud: Barrio Logan’s Modern Taco Gem

Salud brought a modern, farm-to-table approach to Mexican cuisine right in the heart of Barrio Logan. Their tacos feature locally sourced ingredients and house-made tortillas that are thick, slightly charred, and taste like someone’s abuela just handed them to you. The short rib taco with pickled onion and avocado crema is the kind of thing that makes you close your eyes and just appreciate life for a second.

The setting is gorgeous — a beautiful outdoor patio surrounded by Barrio Logan’s vibrant murals and street art. Pair your tacos with one of their craft cocktails (the mezcal options are excellent) and you’ve got yourself a perfect afternoon. Update: Salud closed its Barrio Logan location in 2024. Check their website for any future plans. It’s a bit more upscale than your average taco shop, but the quality of ingredients and the care that goes into every plate makes it absolutely worth the slight splurge.

2196 Logan Ave, Barrio Logan

Bonus: The ‘Berto’s Late-Night Tier List

Let’s address the elephant in the room: the dozens of “‘berto’s” taco shops scattered across San Diego. Rigoberto’s, Alberto’s, Filiberto’s, Adalberto’s — they’re all over the place, and they’re all slightly different despite the similar names. The general consensus among locals? They’re the perfect 11pm-2am taco shop when you need something hot, cheap, and satisfying after a night out. Quality varies by location, but when you find a good ‘berto’s, you hold onto that knowledge like treasure. Ask any San Diego local for their favorite ‘berto’s and prepare for a passionate 15-minute answer.

Wear Your Taco Obsession Proudly

San Diego’s BBQ scene is as diverse and laid-back as the city itself. From smoky brisket that melts in your mouth to backyard-style joints buzzing with music, locals have plenty to rave about. Whether you’re after Texas-style authenticity or a hidden pop-up gem, this roundup curls up the city’s must-try spots for BBQ lovers craving legit flavor and sizzling vibes. You’ve likely heard of Phil’s BBQ, and sure it’s good – but we are rounding up the real Texas BBQ spots around San Diego….

Coop’s West Texas BBQ: Low and Slow Royalty

In Lemon Grove’s unassuming corners sits a temple to Texas tradition. Coop’s meticulous approach to brisket—fourteen hours of oak-smoked patience—yields a bark that crackles like fireworks and meat that dissolves at the touch of a fork.

Locals line up well before weekend opening hours, knowing that when the ‘Sold Out’ sign appears, it’s game over until next week. What separates Coop’s from pretenders is owner Brad Cooper’s unwavering commitment to authenticity—no shortcuts, no gas assistance, just faith in fire and time.

Grand Ole BBQ y Asado: Backyard Vibes and Live Tunes

Step into Grand Ole BBQ y Asado and you’ve crashed the coolest backyard cookout in Flinn Springs. The pit-smoked brisket emerges with a perfect smoke ring that’ll make purists weep with joy.

Weekends bring live music and picnic table camaraderie that turns strangers into friends over shared plates of ribs. Fair warning: on packed nights, consistency can waver—but the rustic charm and oak-kissed meats make it worth rolling the dice on this beloved east county gem.

Smokin J’s BBQ: Brisket, Burnt Ends, and a Touch of Convenience

While Grand Ole brings backyard charm, Smokin J’s BBQ delivers Texas-style precision with locations in both Poway and downtown’s Gaslamp Quarter. Their ingenious central smoking operation in Poway ensures consistent quality across venues—that brisket arrives at your table with the same perfect bark regardless of which location you visit.

The burnt ends and pork belly are transcendent, each bite delivering that ideal balance of smoke, fat, and spice. Here’s a local secret: Costco frequently offers discounted Smokin J’s gift cards, letting you indulge in their meat masterpieces while saving a few dollars for extra sides.

Smokey and the Brisket: Premium Cuts and Craft Cocktails

At Smokey and the Brisket, La Mesa’s crown jewel of meat mastery, the brisket achieves that mythical balance—bark with bite, meat with give. The 14-hour smoked slices collapse beautifully under the gentlest fork pressure, releasing a flood of juices that’ll make you close your eyes in silent appreciation.

The atmosphere strikes a perfect note: Edison bulbs illuminate rustic wood tables while bartenders mix smoked old fashioneds that complement, never compete with, the star proteins. First-timers: skip the combo plate and commit fully to the brisket. At $28 for a generous portion with two sides, it’s San Diego’s most justified splurge.

Bowlegged BBQ: San Diego’s Best Kept Secret

Tucked away in central San Diego, Bowlegged BBQ has earned its reputation through smoke signals rather than flashy marketing. This unassuming joint draws devotees willing to queue for pitmaster Jimmy’s meticulously crafted offerings.

What separates Bowlegged from the pack is their signature dry rub—a closely guarded family recipe with hints of coffee and chile de árbol that creates a bark worth fighting over. Their mustard-based Carolina sauce offers a tangy counterpoint to the rich, 14-hour smoked brisket.

The Thursday-only burnt ends have spawned their own text chain among locals who clear schedules just to secure a portion of these caramelized morsels.

Abbey’s BBQ: A Taste of Texas in Miramar

Homesick Texans rejoice: Abbey’s BBQ serves up Central Texas tradition with no frills and all flavor. The brisket steals the spotlight with its quarter-inch smoke ring and peppery bark that crackles between your teeth.

What sets Abby’s apart is unwavering authenticity—meat served on butcher paper, sauce on the side (if at all), and sides that know their supporting role. The post oak-smoked ribs fall clean off the bone without being mushy.

Pro tip: arrive before 1pm for the best selection, and don’t sleep on the jalapeño cheese sausage, imported directly from the Lone Star State.

NoNo’s BBQ: Pop-Up Magic in Vista

Follow @nonos_bbq on Instagram to catch this BBQ treasure at Dogleg Brewery in Vista. Their schedule appears monthly, but spots fill fast once announced.

The brewery offers a laid-back industrial vibe with ample outdoor seating—perfect for savoring NoNo’s legendary brisket with its impossibly perfect bark. Don’t miss their jalapeño-cheddar sausage links or the bourbon-infused beans that regulars swear by.

Pro tip: Arrive early—lines form before opening, and their most popular items sell out quickly. The friendly staff will guide first-timers through their menu standouts.

Oak and Anchor BBQ: Farmers Market Favorite

Hidden among colorful produce stalls at Little Italy and Ocean Beach farmers markets, Oak and Anchor’s modest setup belies their BBQ brilliance. Follow the irresistible aroma to find pitmaster Joel crafting some of San Diego’s most succulent tri-tip, sliced to order with a perfect smoke ring.

Their bourbon-infused beans simmer all day in cast iron, while the loaded potato salad—studded with bacon and green onions—has developed its own cult following. No fancy restaurant overhead means more value on your plate.

Check their Instagram for market schedules and occasional special cuts like smoked prime rib that sell out before noon.

Locals flock here for a taste of simpler times, returning again and again for old-school favorites crafted just right. The warm, vintage charm and unwavering quality make every visit feel like a cherished tradition.

North Park Creamery: Secret Soft Serve Surprises

Tucked in a lively corner, North Park Creamery puts its own spin on soft serve magic. Every cone starts with impossibly smooth, rich swirls, then gets dressed up with creative, homemade toppings—from browned butter streusel to tangy fruit clusters.

Regulars rave about the secret menu’s hot fudge stuffed cones, featuring gooey chocolate hidden beneath the ice cream. The menu is compact, but each offering is thoughtfully balanced. Warm smiles and a neighborhood spirit make every visit feel like a local secret worth sharing.

Oasis Ice Cream Parlor: Fruity and Dairy-Free Delights

Oasis Ice Cream Parlor stands out in San Diego for its generous variety of fruity, non-dairy, and vegan treats. Their Italian ices, soft and bursting with real fruit flavor, are especially popular—orange is a local favorite, offering a zesty lift.

The mango chamoy cups are another hit: tropical sweetness meets a tangy, spicy swirl for a vibrant, refreshing snack. With so many creative, dairy-free options, this parlor satisfies both traditionalists and adventurous eaters seeking something light and cool.

Pacific Beach Ice Cream: Homemade by the Seaside

Just steps from the boardwalk, Pacific Beach Ice Cream tempts locals and visitors with their creamy, made-in-house flavors. Every batch is spun fresh, resulting in ultra-smooth scoops that draw lines after a sun-soaked day.

Warm smiles from the staff add to the charm, making it easy to linger over creative seasonal specials like tangy honey-lavender or classic vanilla bean. The cozy, beachy vibe makes this spot a beloved detour for anyone craving a sweet, chill ending after their ocean adventures.

The Baked Bear: Custom Ice Cream Sandwiches

📍 4516 Mission Blvd, Pacific Beach

The Baked Bear lets you build your own ice cream sandwich from scratch — pick your cookies (snickerdoodle, red velvet, brownie, chocolate chip, and more), pick your ice cream flavor, and they press it together fresh. The combinations are borderline infinite, which means every visit is different. The cookie dough ice cream between two warm chocolate chip cookies is the one people post about, but honestly, you can’t go wrong.

The PB location on Mission Blvd is open until midnight on weekends, which makes it a perfect post-beach or post-bar stop. Lines can get long on summer evenings, but they move fast. They also do shakes and sundaes if sandwiches aren’t your thing — but they should be your thing.

Cali Cream Homemade Ice Cream: 50+ Flavors Daily

📍 90 N Coast Hwy 101, Suite 101, Encinitas

Cali Cream makes all their ice cream in-house from scratch — over 50 flavors available on any given day. That’s not a typo. Fifty. The banana crème is legendary, the ube is fantastic, and they rotate seasonal flavors that keep regulars coming back weekly. Because the base is homemade, the texture is noticeably richer and creamier than shops using commercial mixes.

They also do dairy-free options that are genuinely good (not just “good for dairy-free”), plus fresh-baked goods. The shop is right on the 101 in downtown Encinitas — grab a scoop and walk around the village. Open until 10pm most nights, 11pm on weekends.

Right in the shadow of Petco Park, Bub’s at the Ballpark captures the spirit of the game like nowhere else. It is a highlight on our Best Sports Bars in San Diego and our readers love it enough to land it on our Best Wings of San Diego list!

Work hard, WING harder! As of July 2024, they are serving up BOGO Wings Wednesday’s from 3pm-Close with an epic night of Sunset Trivia starting at 7pm.

Royal Mandarin (42 Votes)

📍 1132 E Plaza Blvd #205, National City, CA 91950

The underdog, Royal Mandarin, a Chinese restaurant in National City secured itself a spot on our list. It’s been around for over 40 years and continues to impress.

A wing favorite is the salt and pepper chicken wings. This classic choice can be paired with sauce if you are looking for a little extra. BUT give it a try without dipping it first! It has been known to surprise wing enthusiasts.

Churchill’s Pub & Grille (27 Votes)

📍 887 West San Marcos Blvd, San Marcos, CA 92069

Representing North County, Churchill’s Pub and Grille is coming THROUGH with their wings. They have a variety of BBQ options – Spicy, Guinness, and Blackberry for starters. Tey bring the heat on their Ivan’s Revenge wings. Not sure what was done to Ivan, but these are S-P-I-C-Y! Don’t say we didn’t warn you.

Regal Beagle (25 Votes)

📍 3659 India St, San Diego, CA 92103

The Regal Beagle makes the cut with their 10 amazing sauces along with freshly made in-house ranch and blue cheeses. Okay, but really what’s better- homemade ranch or spicy wings?

As an added reason to check it out, this Mission Hills spot also has a fine selection of craft beer and a complete menu of artisan sausage. Wings or woofs, you decide.

Sandbox (24 Votes)

📍 1466 Garnet Ave, San Diego, CA 92109

Rounding out the Best Wings in San Diego is Sandbox. While this is the last choice on our list, it is a top pick for Sloan “Caveman” Clymer which tells you something. I would not want to go into battle with that dude over best wings.

Located on Garnet, it’s in the heart of PB. Come with the wings, made Boston style, and stay all night when you get a fishbowl to go with it. If you’re planning to spend the day in PB we got you covered with the Top things to do in Pacific Beach.

📍1430 Union St, San Diego, CA 92101

Mercato Farmers Market

Thankful for San Diego sunshine and year round farmers markets. That, my friends, is why you pay the sunshine tax even when it ends up raining 500 days in one year. Guess what, the farmers markets aren’t afraid of a little rain and you shouldn’t be either.

Our Farmer Market vendor recommendations include Crumb Protein Donuts for being absolutely delish and also having options for EVERYONE. For the gluten-free, for the keto, for the children, and for our dear diabetic friends. Everyone deserves a donut at Crumb. You go Glen Coco!

Another shout out goes to SoulRoots. With all the plant daddies and mommies in SoCal, these indoor and outdoor plants will liven up any space. Treasure them, love them, and tell all your friends when you reproduce them.

Little Italy Mercato Farmers Market takes place on Wednesdays, 9:30AM – 1:30PM.  Check out their Wednesday Vendors

📍 West Date Street from Kettner to State.

Wednesdays don’t work for you? Notta problem, stop by on Saturdays from 8:00AM to 2:00PM.  Check out their Saturday Vendors

ArtWalk

The ArtWalk encompasses what is so special about Little Italy. Get out your calendars and mark down the date NOW. This is a site to be SEEN! Taking place in late April of each year, ArtWalk San Diego is a masterpiece. Enjoy free admission, live music, incredible food, interactive art for kids, and obviously – the most insane artwork. This includes an open-air “gallery” showcasing the work of over 250 visual and performing artists from the US and Mexico.

It’s also good for the community. ArtWalk activities help to support the mission of ArtReach San Diego, the nonprofit organization that takes high-quality visual art workshops into San Diego County K-6 schools, offering free programming to schools with no resources for art education.

Seaport Village

Honorable mention – Seaport Village. The welcoming waterfront shopping complex is a mile from Little Italy and completely walkable.

Navigate Seaport Village by using the online map and directory. In addition to live music, they also host events and holiday celebrations. We have laid out the Top Things to do in Seaport Village. Don’t wait to go. With many changes to the operations (read about that here) it’s predicted to remain as is for another 3-5 years. After that, we’ll blame the suits.
