September and October are actually some of the best beach months, with warm water and smaller crowds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"El_Nino_La_Nina\"><\/span>El Ni\u00f1o \/ La Ni\u00f1a<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">San Diegans are obsessed with these weather patterns. El Ni\u00f1o means warmer, wetter winters, while La Ni\u00f1a brings drier conditions. Expect to hear endless speculation about whether we\u2019re in an El Ni\u00f1o or La Ni\u00f1a year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Del\"><\/span>The Del<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Short for Hotel del Coronado, one of San Diego\u2019s most iconic landmarks. If someone says, &#8220;Let\u2019s grab drinks at The Del,&#8221; get ready for pricey cocktails with an ocean view.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%E2%80%9CThe_5%E2%80%B3_%E2%80%9CThe_8%E2%80%9D_%E2%80%9CThe_805%E2%80%9D\"><\/span>\u201cThe 5&#8243; \/ &#8220;The 8&#8221; \/ &#8220;The 805&#8221;<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Unlike most places that just say &#8220;I-5&#8221; or &#8220;Highway 8,&#8221; San Diegans throw a &#8220;the&#8221; in front of freeway names. If you\u2019re heading downtown, you\u2019ll take the 5 south, not just \u201c5 south.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Cali_Burrito\"><\/span>Cali Burrito<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">A San Diego staple. This isn&#8217;t just any burrito\u2014it\u2019s stuffed with carne asada, cheese, guacamole, salsa, and (most importantly) French fries. If you&#8217;re at a taco shop and don&#8217;t order a Cali burrito at least once, are you even in San Diego?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"June_Gloom_May_Gray_No-Sky_July\"><\/span>June Gloom \/ May Gray \/ No-Sky July<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">San Diego\u2019s weather isn\u2019t always sunny\u2014shocking, right? Locals use these phrases to describe the overcast <a href=\"https:\/\/sandiegohumor.com\/may-gray-june-gloom-unraveling-san-diegos-cloudy-mysteries\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">marine layer<\/a> that dominates early summer mornings. Don\u2019t worry, though\u2014by midday, the sun usually wins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Locals_Only\"><\/span>Locals Only<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">If you see &#8220;Locals Only&#8221; scrawled on a surfboard or a beachside fence, take it as a not-so-subtle warning. Some of San Diego\u2019s surf spots\u2014like Blacks Beach or Windansea\u2014are known for their fiercely territorial locals who aren\u2019t too keen on out-of-towners crowding their waves. It\u2019s mostly just surfer culture bravado, but, uh\u2026 maybe don\u2019t drop in on someone\u2019s wave if you don\u2019t want to test it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Green_Flash\"><\/span>Green Flash<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">No, it\u2019s not a superhero\u2014it\u2019s a rare optical phenomenon that happens at sunset when the conditions are just right. If you&#8217;re watching the sun dip below the horizon at Sunset Cliffs or Pacific Beach, you might catch a quick green flash for a split second. It\u2019s kind of a rite of passage for San Diegans to claim they\u2019ve seen one, even if they haven&#8217;t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Yeah_No_For_Sure\"><\/span>Yeah No For Sure<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">A classic piece of San Diego speak, this phrase somehow manages to mean both yes and no at the same time, but really saying YES. Yeah, locals call it the &#8220;sunshine tax.&#8221; It\u2019s not an actual tax, but we all know we\u2019re paying a premium just to live in perfect weather year-round.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Animal_Style\"><\/span>Animal Style<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">While not <em>strictly<\/em> San Diego slang, ordering a Double-Double Animal Style at In-N-Out is second nature to locals. It means a double cheeseburger with grilled onions, pickles, and extra sauce\u2014and if you\u2019re in SD, you probably have one in your hands after a beach day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Zonie\"><\/span>Zonie<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">A local nickname for Arizonans who flood San Diego every summer to escape the scorching desert heat. You can spot a Zonie by their sunburns, ASU stickers, and total confusion about how parking works at the beach. Locals have a love-hate relationship with them\u2014love their tourism money, hate their driving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Potato_Chip_Rock\"><\/span>Potato Chip Rock<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">A famous, thin rock formation near the summit of Mount Woodson that looks like a potato chip jutting out over the edge of a cliff. It\u2019s a rite of passage for hikers (and Instagram influencers) to wait in line for the iconic \u201changing off the edge\u201d photo.
